Weyt-kp, My name is Kaylea Prosser and I am currently in my first year in the Bachelor of Education at Thompson Rivers University. Although it is my first year in the education program at Thompson Rivers University, it is my fourth year of post secondary education. I am working towards getting my undergrad degree in Bachelor of General Arts with concentrations in English and Sociology. My undergrad degree will help me immensely in the teaching profession as I have the ability to be a reflective practitioner who understands the variety of sources that influence individuals.

I was born and raised in Kamloops and have learned so much about myself from this beautiful city. From playing soccer all across the city, to attending elementary, high school and now university I am extremely privileged that one day I might be able to teach here as well. I come from a large family of seven kids as well as foster children. My mom’s career as a foster parent allowed me to practice my teaching without even knowing I was. I am so grateful for my mom’s career as it allowed me to develop many skills that are transferable to my future career.

Another asset that I bring to the classroom is my traveling and coaching experience. In my free time I enjoy traveling, whether it be small trips exploring the interior of British Columbia or going on a plane and exploring countries in Europe. I have been privileged enough to have explored seven countries in Europe, Mexico, Eastern Canada as well as the west coast of the United States of America. In the future I would love to travel to South America as well as Africa, in order to experience cultures and traditions that are quite unknown to me. When I am not traveling you can find me playing any kind of sport as well as coaching it. Growing up I was able to explore any sport I found interesting. I stuck to three main sports, being basketball, soccer and volleyball. While I continue to play soccer in an adult league in Kamloops, basketball and volleyball I do not play anymore. Although I am not playing I still do help out and coach volleyball when extra support is needed.

Once I am completed with my degrees, my goal is to teach abroad and gather new memories as well as experience before coming back to Canada and hopefully settle down on the island, teaching grades 4-5.

A&W (2015-2019)

Working at A&W was my first job while I was in Highschool. Although it was a fast food, entry level job it taught me many valuable lessons such as patience, multitasking and the ability to teach others. Many of the lessons I learned here not only are needed for the other skills to work but also can be applied to my future teaching career. Patience was the biggest take away as I needed to work not only at my pace and learning way but with others as well. This is something that directly applies to me as a teacher. I cannot expect others or students to learn at the pace I am going, I must work with those around me so that we both can cross the finish line.

This was my first trip outside of North America on my own with my high school class. I spent two weeks away from home traveling outside of my comfort zone. This trip pushed me to think that my North American views weren’t the only or right views. Experiencing different meals, rituals and daily life made me appreciate but also question ways of knowing and living. This trip sparked my intrigue to different cultures and ways of living which is something I am so privileged and happy I get to continue to explore.

After my trip to Central Europe I had a need to discover more and learn about life outside of Canada. Greece did that for me, I was able to see yet another side of Europe and the ways of life. This trip was a group trip but half of the days were spent alone, so during that time I really pushed myself outside of my comfort zone. Being alone made me uncomfortable, which is the best place to learn. Learning different words, places and about new people is something that I can use in my classroom as getting to know my students will help them learn.
